WESTERN CANTABRIA

Western Cantabria covers from the bay of Santander to the border area with Asturias, has magnificent places such as Santillana de Mar, Comillas, Suances or San Vicente de la Barquera among others. It is an area of great tourist attraction due to its beaches, its nature, its culture and its gastronomy. It has a great diversity of activities to do and multiple areas to visit.

WHAT TO SEE IN WESTERN CANTABRIA?

Among many other places, in Western Cantabria you can find:

Santillana del Mar:it has the Caves of Altamira (World Heritage Site) and its replica the Neocueva, of great tourist importance, since it is the first place in the world that was identified as the existence of rock art of the Upper Paleolithic. Due to its historical-artistic ensemble, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. You can also visit one of its museums (such as the Museum of Torture), its majestic Collegiate Church or its zoo.

 

Comillas: impressive village where you will find countless works by the famous architects of modernism Gaudí or Martorell, such as Gaudí’s Capricho, the Sobrellano Palace or the Pontifical University of Comillas. It has different routes both by bicycle and on foot, one of them is the Ruta del Cine, which offers a tour of locations where different feature films have been made. There you will also find the best viewpoint located towards the Natural Park of Oyambre.

 

San Vicente de la Barquera: magnificent place to walk along its beaches, through Puebla Vieja, since it has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and enjoy its gastronomy. It has the King’s Castle of the thirteenth century, one of the few that are preserved in the north of Spain; the church of Santa María de los Ángeles, inside which is the Sepulchre of the Inquisitor Antonio del Corro, considered the most beautiful funerary sculpture in the country.

 

Cabezón de la Sal:in this town is the Sequoia Forest of Monte Cabezón, an impressive place for the height of the redwoods that has been declared a Natural Monument of Cantabria.
