Doing the Camino de Santiago in an organized group

A little history about the Camino de Santiago

We should really call it “Camino de Santiago de Compostela”. Many may believe that it is a route, but it is really the denomination that receives a set of routes, all of them lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and more specifically to the tomb of the Apostle Santiago, also known as Santiago el Mayor.

These are Christian pilgrimage paths, whose origin is medieval. It is said that the first pilgrim was King Alfonso II the Chaste in the year 813, since he walked from Oviedo in order to make sure that the Tomb of the Apostle Santiago had really been miraculously found. When he confirmed that this was true, he had a small church built to bury him, a place that King Alfonso III ordered to be rebuilt in 899, becoming the well-known Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Formerly it was known by the name Camino de Santiago, the route that goes from the Pyrenees to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, today, this route is known as the Camino Frances de Santiago, being called Camino de Santiago to all the existing Jacobean Routes.

It is undoubtedly the best known itinerary and with the largest number of pilgrims on the continent.
